COURSE DESCRIPTION Preparation for certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:  Apply fundamental knowledge of the EMS system, safety/well-being of the EMT, and medical/legal and ethical issues to the provisions of emergency care.  Apply fundamental knowledge of the anatomy and function of all human systems to the practice of EMS.  Use fundamental anatomical and medical terms and abbreviations in written and oral communication with colleagues and other health care professionals.  Apply fundamental knowledge of the pathophysiology of respiration and perfusion to patient assessment and management.  Apply fundamental knowledge of life span development to patient assessment and management.  Use simple knowledge of the principles of illness and injury prevention in emergency care.  Apply fundamental knowledge of the medications that the EMT may assist/administer to a patient during an emergency.  Apply knowledge (fundamental depth, fundamental breadth) of general anatomy and physiology to patient assessment and management to assure a patent airway, adequate mechanical ventilation, and respiration for patients of all ages.  Apply scene information and patient assessment findings (scene size up, primary and secondary assessment, patient history, and reassessment) to guide emergency management.  Apply fundamental knowledge to provide basic emergency care and transportation based on assessment findings for an acutely ill patient.  Apply fundamental knowledge of the causes, pathophysiology, and management of shock, respiratory failure or arrest, and post resuscitation management.  Apply fundamental knowledge to provide basic emergency care and transportation based on assessment findings for an acutely injured patient.  Apply fundamental knowledge of growth, development, and aging and assessment findings to provide basic emergency care and transportation for a patient with special needs. Apply knowledge of operational roles and responsibilities to ensure safe patient, public, and personnel safety. These are both found in your Blackboard course. ATTENDANCE POLICY Three absences are allowed. If a student is tardy to class or departs early two (2) times, it will be equal to one (1) absence. Each absence beyond three absences will result in a 5-point deduction from your final grade. Attendance in this class is based on both students’ presence, as well at students’ participation in class. DROP POLICY If you wish to drop a course, you are responsible for initiating and completing the drop process. If you stop coming to class and fail to drop the course, you will earn an “F” in the course. STUDENT EXPECTED TIME REQUIREMENT For every hour in class (or unit of credit), students should expect to spend at least two to three hours per week studying and completing assignments outside of class. Online/Hybrid students should expect to spend at least as much time in this course as in the face-to-face class.
